- An illustrious past! Dawsonville's history dates all the way back to the nineteenth century, around the gold rush. The courthouse and the official county jail were the first buildings to be built in town, and the city itself was named for William Crosby Dawson, a famous Georgian soldier, politician, judge and anti-slavery campaigner. After the Army created Lake Lanier in 1956, there was further development and increased interest in tourism in the area.
