- Hazlehurst began as a train depot! Deep in the heart of pine forest and river lands lies Hazlehurst, GA. Founded in 1870, Hazlehurst and Jeff Davis County was a train depot located at the halfway point between Brunswick and Macon. The small community of Hazlehurst sprung up around the depot and was named after Colonel Hazlehurst. Hazlehurst is also the County Seat for Jeff Davis County. The county was incorporated on August 18, 1905, and was named for the President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis.
